Buccal lipectomy, or cheek reduction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes specific pads of fat (called the buccal fat pads) from inside the cheeks. The result is a more contoured, chiseled, and slimmed facial appearance.
Buccal fat removal is a highly specialized procedure with a specific goal: reducing the appearance of chubby cheeks caused by large fat pads. The procedure does not remove fat in the same way liposuction does; instead, your surgeon removes the fat through small incisions inside the mouth for a permanent, chiseled look. Benefits of buccal fat removal include:
- A more chiseled facial appearance
- More pronounced cheekbones
- No visible scar
- Minimal recovery
- Permanent results
Ideal buccal fat removal results begin with the strict vetting of candidates, as this procedure yields permanent results. Candidates for buccal lipectomy should have particularly pronounced or rounded cheeks, not just excess fat throughout the face. It’s also important that patients do not have extremely angular or narrow faces, as removing the buccal pad can result in a gaunt appearance. Dr. Patel will discuss your candidacy during your consultation, but ideal candidates:
- Have overly round cheeks
- Do not have a narrow face
- Will not likely look gaunt with age
- Want a chiseled appearance
- Have reasonable expectations for results
- Are in good health
- Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit
Schedule an in-depth consultation with Dr. Patel to learn whether this procedure is right for you. He will examine your cheeks and face to determine the source of the roundness and ensure that buccal removal will get you the results you want. How Buccal Lipectomy Is Performed
The Buccal Lipectomy Procedure Steps
Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s needs and goals. However, a general buccal fat removal procedure will proceed as follows:
- Anesthesia is administered for your comfort: typically, local or twilight sedation, but general anesthesia can also be used depending on your needs and the surgical plan.
- Dr. Patel makes two short incisions, one on each side of your mouth, on the inside of your cheeks. There is no visible scar.
- He will then access the buccal fat pad on each side, flatten it, and carefully excise part of it to create an angular effect.
- Finally, he will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures.
How Is a Neck Lift Performed?
Neck lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, but you will need a friend or family member to drive you home and help care for you after surgery.
While your neck lift is customized to you, you can anticipate the following:
- You will meet with Dr. Patel preoperatively to review the details of your procedure.
- General anesthesia will be administered for your safety and comfort.
- Pre-marked incisions are made starting at the temporal hairline and extending down and around each ear.
- An additional incision is made beneath the chin to reduce submental fat, release vertical bands, and tighten the platysma muscle.
- The deep neck and jaw tissues are further tightened, and the skin is lifted and secured.
- Loose skin is trimmed along the edges of the incision.
- Sutures and skin adhesives are used to close these incisions.
- Dressings, drains, and a headwrap are placed to assist in healing.
Although you may be required to rest for an hour or so in the recovery room, you can go home the same day. Before going home, you will receive instructions about how to care for yourself during recovery.
Buccal Lipectomy Recovery & Aftercare
Buccal fat removal is a short outpatient procedure lasting about one hour. Buccal fat removal recovery is a little different from other cosmetic surgery recoveries, as the incisions are made inside the mouth. In a way, it’s much easier, but you will still need to take it easy and follow all of Dr. Patel’s instructions. After surgery, you will be cleared to go home with a responsible driver. Some buccal fat recovery instructions may include:
- Wearing your compression strap as directed (if applicable)
- Taking your antibiotics or special mouthwash as directed to avoid infection
- Sleeping with your head elevated to help reduce swelling
- Maintaining a liquid diet for at least 48 hours after surgery
- Avoiding disturbing or touching your sutures
Although buccal fat removal is a relatively simple procedure, you’ll need to be careful as you recover from the procedure. You will still experience swelling that may cause some discomfort for a while, which is why a compression garment can help. Additionally, your final results will continue to improve as swelling dissipates over the next few weeks.
Most patients notice an immediate change in their cheeks, although swelling can obscure it. As swelling subsides, your cheeks will continue to look more angular and chiseled, revealing sharper cheekbones and a contoured appearance.
